Meet The Board
Kevin

Kevin

Member of the Board of the Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance (“MHVA”)

Kevin is the Chairman of the Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance. He is a founding member since 2010. Providing assistance to homeless veterans in the worst conditions. Searching for veterans outside and providing sleeping bags, tents, water, hygiene kits, socks and clothing. Kevin has worn out 3 GMC vans traveling all over Maine picking up and dispersing donations. The goal is to help and assist veterans into the VA system or other agencies. When veterans move into an apartment, MHVA provides veterans with a new bed and furniture.

Kevin [MHVA] has helped over 350 veterans [includes spouses and vet children], with furniture [beds, dressers, recliners, kitchen tables, and chairs, kitchen packs that includes everything for the kitchen, side tables, lamps, couch, and food] when moving into apartments. MHVA has helped veterans with moving personal belongings from storage units to apartments. He started the new bed for vets policy [get the veteran off the floor]. The past several years MHVA has purchased a ew bed for veterans [33 in 2022]. Every year, the number of vets increased, so more beds are needed. MHVA purchases beds from Hub furniture. Kevin believes that a good quality bed will help a veteran sleep well and not hurt the veterans back like cheap junk beds provide.

Kevin has recycled over 90 tons of furniture, 7.5 tons of old clothing. Distributed several thousand pairs of socks, hundreds of sleeping bags, tents, tarps, hygiene kits, snacks and other food stuff. Kevin has distributed many “backpacks for homeless dogs” from no bowls empty.

Since Kevin became chairman, MHVA has grown by improving the Board of Directors with outstanding community members and a mix of seasoned veterans. He has also expanded the corp of volunteers, using several college and university students during projects. MHVA expanded by connecting two well established programs, No Bowls Empty and It takes a Village 207. The two have a long responsibility providing to the community [including a large amount of veterans]. MHVA won peoples choice award for favorite non-profit-charity. Kevin also expanded MHVA contacts with Elks, VFW, American Legion, Gneiss Brewing company, FedEx, TSA, Kittery Trading Post, Town Fair Tires, Gorham police department., Gorham schools, York schools, and many more. Over two dozen caseworkers, social workers, and agencies are now in contact with MHVA.

Kevin and all MHVA Board Members with help of the alliance, have provided a way to get the veterans “off the ground, and off the floor.”

Kevin is a Navy Veteran [ All State Maine Company ], former President of Nicolson Inc. Kevin went to basic engineering school, basic electronics and electricity school, Navy electrician school, several firefighting schools. Played on 4 different basketball teams in Navy. Took math classes at college of Charleston, USM, worked in Paper industry learning mechanical and chemical engineering. Trained in Sweden in design engineering. He plays guitar, writes songs and composes music. Takes walks with a cane Corso dog. Feeds deer and birds during winter, plays in all original band, hunting, shark fishing, reading old history books.

Journey

Journey

Member of the Board of the Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance (“MHVA”)

Meet Journey! In the winter of 2018 Journey joined the MHVA family . She was already helping the homeless on her own so it was an easy transition to MHVA. It gave her more opportunities to help more people. Often times you will see Journey in the passenger seat of the MHVA van , sitting next to Kevin ( the chairman ) as they drive around looking for homeless vets and helping other homeless folks along the way. Journey started a project called It Takes A Village 207 in 2020 as she started helping those veterans who had been housed with things like food , clothing , pet food, heat and Christmas. In 2021 the Christmas program became very big and her daughter Becky joined forces with her and our “Desiree’s Kindness From Above” first annual Christmas program went into full swing and we helped Aprox 288 kids for Christmas that year and 235 kids in 2022. The Christmas program continues to grow. Her favorite part of the Christmas program besides seeing the pictures the parents send us of Christmas morning is playing the role of The Grinch while doing fundraisers, Journey is a firm believer that it takes a whole village to be a village and loves her village more and more every day. When Journey isn’t helping people with life’s emergencies she likes to paint , her favorite is abstract on canvas with acrylics. You can also find her out foraging for wild plants and herbs.

Inge Herxing-Rice

Member of the Board of the Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance (“MHVA”)

I enjoy helping Adam do outreach for the homeless, and I am drawn to helping animals, both wild and domestic. Whether it’s a friend’s cat or dog facing euthanization needing a new home, I’ll do anything within my power to get them the help they need. Our bathroom is often an unofficial animal shelter housing animals until I can find the right home or shelter to take them. I am also an enthusiastic volunteer at Misfits Wildlife Rehab, which took in over 600 wild critters last year! It has been an honor to be of assistance to animals in need. They are my passion and muse in my artwork. I have been a professional artist since elementary school and make a living through taking commissions, selling my art and through my little jewelry vending business, The Mermaid Vixen.

Rebecca (Becky) Jackson, Limington Maine. Rebecca recently became an official board member for Maine Homeless Veterans Alliance (MHVA) in January 2023. However, she has been working behind the scenes for quite some time. In 2020 Becky helped co-found It Takes A Village (ITAV) now It Takes A Village 207, with her mother, Journey. Together they teamed up to make a difference in the lives of struggling Maine families. They have a special bond & make a great team. Journey was already a board member for MHVA & In late 2020, ITAV joined forces with MHVA. Becky is married to her husband Roland of 20 years. Their lives became complete when they adopted their beautiful daughter Gracie in 2018. Prior to becoming a mother, Becky worked as a Substitute Teacher, Behavioral Health Professional and a Developmental Therapist. She specialized in Applied Behavioral analysis. Working with children with autism was her passion. She also attended the University of Maine for Social Work, where she frequently made the Deans List. She has always had a love for helping others, & being a part in helping the unhoused Veterans of Maine is now something she deeply loves. On top of being an administrator for the MHVA and ITAV page, she also owns a soap business, and runs several other pages/groups. She runs a large homeschooling group in Maine, & since her daughter’s recent medical challenges, runs a group on advocating for the medical conditions: Pans/Pandas and Lyme disease. In Rebecca’s spare time she enjoys spending time with her daughter, fishing, taking photos, making soap, collecting geodes, attending Pow Wow’s, and spending time at the lake and ocean.
